What Causes The Feeling Of Obstruction In Throat While Swallowing Food?

I sometimes have a temporary blockage when swollowing solids resulting in being unable to swollow liquid either for a few minutes. eventually it will go down if I wait. This doesn t happen often and began to occur after I had a plate put in my neck several years ago. (from the front).

Anesthesiologist 's  Response
Hello,

Difficulty in swallowing is seen in Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, scleroderma, myasthenia gravis, multiple sclerosis, stroke, muscular dystrophy, achalasia, esophageal spasms, esophageal scarring due to GERD, Barrett's esophagus, esophageal tumor and neck swelling due to large thyroid nodule

You need a detailed clinical examination in person and the following tests like:
1) Flexible laryngoscopy
2) Fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES)
3) Modified barium swallow
4) Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy if necessary.

Please do consult a gastroenterologist for further evaluation.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
