Hello.

Thanks for writing to HCM.

From the information you have provided, you do seem to have cellulitis. If the medication prescribed to you has not worked, it needs to be changed i.e. a different antibiotic or possibly intravenous antibiotics. Hence, you need to visit your doctor as early as possible to avoid complications like spread of the infection further up the leg or to the bone or deep vein thrombosis. It may also result in the loss of the foot or limb.

Another possibility is that the infection has already spread to the bone and caused osteomyelitis, due to which the medications you have been prescribed are not working. In this case, you will need to be hospitalised and given intravenous antibiotics. Surgery may be necessary if the antibiotics donot work.

If you have injured your foot, a sprain or fracture or a possibility. However, I think it is unlikely as you have not mentioned any specific injury.

A complete blood count (blood test), random blood sugars (to see if your sugars have been too high which is causing delayed healing) and an Xray of the foot are initial investigations which need to be done.

Hope this helps. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Regards,
Dr Geeta
