Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes The Onset Of Numbness And Tingling Sensation In Feet And Toes?
I have a sudden onset of numbness and tingling in both feet and toes. Also in both hands. I have bilateral carpel tunnel syndrome and an old injury to the tendon that connects my right thumb to my right hand which causes sharp pain and numbness in that hand. I also have chronic low back pain. I ve had 3 fusions and a laminectomy in my lumbar spine. I have greatly increased low back pain following a recent move which coincides with the numbness as well as a change in my mattress. I have been tested for diabetes in the past with negative results and more recently with slightly elevated blood sugar while I was on seroquel for bipolar disorder. The seroquel was partially (if not more) responsible for a large weight gain. Since I have stopped the seroquel, about one month ago, my eating habits have much improved and I have lost about ten pounds.
In your case, symptoms indicate that it could be neuropathy or fibromyalgia. I would suggest to do Doppler ultrasound and EMG for a start.
Till that check your blood sugar and calcium levels since these causes may lead to numbness as well. Though occasional numbness can occur, persistent numbness and tingling can be an indication of a serious underlying medical problem.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
