Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes The Tongue To Get Stuck To The Roof Of The Mouth?
My father has been having episodes, that his tongue sticks to his roof of his mouth and his speech sounds like he is having a stroke. It lasts about an hour or so and strikes at random times. He has had a quad bypass about 4 years ago, but otherwise is normal when these episodes occur.
Tongue sticking to roof of mouth generally occurs in dry mouth syndrome. Dry mouth syndrome is a disease in which there is decreased flow of saliva. Normally saliva lubricates the mouth cavity, if there is decreased saliva there will be tongue sticking. This is more common in elderly people. Your father's bypass is not much related to this condition. Decreased saliva most commonly occurs in some infections. psychiatric medications, mouth breathing, diabetes etc. So check for the above conditions. If there is infection fever will be there. Psychiatric medications and mouth breathing can be rules out by yourself. In case of diabetes, it needs to be controlled. There is no need to worry, this is not a severe problem. If dry mouth is severe you can start Pilocarpine.
Take Care!
