Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I noticed a couple of days ago when I bend over, exert myself, or push/strain, the jugular vein on the right side of my neck bulges out. And not just a little, a lot. After I stop straining, or return to an upright position, the bulging goes away. I m a 26 year old male and have polycythemia vera . Is this something I should be concerned about?

What Causes The Vein On The Neck To Bulge Out?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice. This is due to volume in the jugular vein which exerts a pressure and makes it bulge. As you strain, venous return increase and make it bulge. Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further. Regards, Dr. Bhadresh Lakhani
