What Causes Thick And Chunky Vaginal Discharge?

I have been experiencing thick, chunky, vaginal discharge with moderate-severe vaginal odor for more than 4 months. I have tried monostat 3 times, thinking it was a yeast infection, and I ve also tried drinking apple cider vinegar to balance out my pH levels and I am getting no relief. I m concerned that it may not be a yeast infection and I don t know how to cure it. Please help me.

Hi there and thanks for sharing your health concern with us at HCM.

Thick, chunky, malodorous discharge from the vagina is a sure sign of infection. Besides candidiasis (yeast infection), bacterial vaginosis can also cause a malodorous discharge, although it is usually a thin discharge. Trichomoniasis, which is a parasitic infection can also cause a foul odour. It would be best to get some swabs taken by your regular doctor and sent off for a definitive diagnosis.

I am also concerned if there might be any foreign body e.g. broken tampon that might have been accidentally left behind. The presence of a foreign object inside can also result in persistent discharge.

My other concern is regarding your blood sugar. Glucose intolerance (pre-diabetes) can present as recurrent or persistent vaginal infections, especially with candida (fungus).

Also, were you by any chance put on antibiotics prior to developing this dicharge? Sometimes, antibiotics wipe out good bacteria as well as the disease-causing ones and this can result in persistent vaginal discharge in some women.

My advice is to go see your regular doctor, discuss these possibilities with him or her and have proper vaginal exam. Get you Pap smear done at the same time if you have not done so for this year. If you may be pre-diabetic, do some blood work and start eating clean. If you are overweight, losing weight healthily can help reduce the likelihood of developing diabetes.

If you do use a feminine wash, be sure it is pH friendly and fragrance free. Use non-perfumed panty liners and change them 2 hourly. Start yourself on some good probiotics to re-establish a healthy crop of friendly bacteria. Be sure to drink enough water and practice good self-hygiene.

I hope this answers your question satisfactorily.
Take care and good luck
