What Causes Thick Brown Nasal Discharge While Treating Sinus Allergy?

Hi, I have allergies and I am familiar with sinus trouble, but Saturday I blew my nose and the discharge was the color of chocolate syrup, and very stringy. This is only from one side, and is hard to blow out. The mucus seems like 2 or 3 inch worms, and such a strange color, obviously something is bleeding up there. The one side is plugged up, but after I blow it is cleared for a while. I have not seen any mucus this color ever before, and like I said, stringy like worms. eeeww. can you help? Thanks!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

If you are not infected, then the allergies are causing some bleeding up in the sinuses. Try using nasal saline to relieve the dryness and get the bleeding to stop. Use a sterile product and use it frequently during the day.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Kathy Robinson, General & Family Physician
