What Causes Thickening Of The Ear Drum?

I have a thickening of my left eardrum, ct scans are negative for cholestoma , I have ear fullness and during the day it feels like pressure comes and goes. Almost like swimmers ears. Had an audiogram and my hearing is about 10 dcb lower than normal. I do wear hearing aids. The hearing loss in my left ear has in the last few months. Also feels like I have an earplug in my ear. Wondering why my eardrum is thickened and what could cause - what disease. no rupture and temps was fine - no fluid in ear.

Internal Medicine Specialist 's  Response
Hello,

Thickening of tympanic membrane is called myringosclerosis. Exact cause for myringosclerosis is not known but possible causes are repeated middle ear infection or Eustachian tube block or atherosclerosis et cetera.

Treat it with hearing aid. If ossicular chain involved, then need reconstruction through surgery required. Please consult your ENT specialist, he/she will examine and treat you accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Penchila Prasad Kandikattu
