What Causes Thickening Of The Heart Muscles?

Been told that I have thickening of heart walls. I have had some of the symptoms, but Dr. says it is mild and no big deal! Why would I have come to the Dr. with unanswered fainting spells, chest pain, fatigue, weakness, headaches, etc. I have had controlled blood pressure for 3 years now, Diabetes within the last six months! I understand that this can be sometimes genetic. Should I have my children checked? Is this a dangerous condition?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Certain types of wall thickness may be genetic like hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy.

They have a typical look, and in such cases, we recommend screening if the children at later ages.

However, Wall thickness is many times caused by hypertension. In such cases there is no need to screen the children. So your Dr may tell you as what might be the cause and whether you need screening or not.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
