What Causes Throat Pain, Severe Cough, Excessive Sleepiness And Loss Of Appetite?

My daughter had vomiting and fever on Thursday and Friday and now it has moved to her head and throat. At first the doctor said its a virus but now I am concerned because her throat hurts really bad and is red. She is coughing and has slept more than she has been awake for the past 4 days and has had no appetite Are these typical flu symptoms?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

I'm sorry to hear your daughter has been so sick. I agree with your doctor that this is most likely a virus, either one of the many viruses that cause the common "cold", or the influenza "flu" virus.

With the vomiting influenza might be more likely. Either way, antibiotics do not help with a virus and most of the treatment is just trying to minimize the symptoms.

Assuming she is a child, you could treat the cough with honey (it can be mixed with tea or juice) which I've found to be very effective and safe. A sore throat can be treated with lozenges if she is old enough, and the fever with Acetaminophen.

Now, usually with viruses, after about 3-4 days she should start to get better, though a cough may last for several weeks.

But if she is getting worse after this time, or continues to have fevers, I would return to your doctor to check for any new bacterial infection, such as ear or sinus infection, or pneumonia.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr Aaron Branch, General & Family Physician
