What Causes Throat Tightness And Shortness Of Breath?

For several years I have experienced shortness of breath upon exercise. I have NEVER smoked. I am under the care of a cardiologist, who doesn t feel that it is my heart ( I do have a heart murmur). I do have stents. I saw him last Sept and he said, I l see you in a year. I just had an annual physical and my GP has no suggestions. I am 80 years of age. The symptoms vary with the weather. What I feel is a tightening in the throat similar to what might experience if you go outside in extreme cold weather and take a deep breath. It is not debilitaing...just very uncomfortable. General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted the history about a 80 years old male having tightness in throat similar to to what might experience on going outside in extreme cold, has stents in heart and Cardiologist says this is not the reason. Sort of a shortness of breath.
The reason loos to be intolerance to something in atmosphere causing an allergy.
Aging causes reduced function of all organs and can be the reason for the same.
I would advise you the following in such a situation:
Consult an ENT Surgeon for ENT Endoscopy to find out whether there is any problems in nose, throat or larynx.
If required CT scan of neck and thorax to rule out any mass can help.
Sometimes the changes in cervical spine causing projection behind larynx can cause similar problems.
Once the cause is found then the symptoms can be treated well.
Pulmonary function tests can help further.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
