What Causes Throbbing Pain In The Right Temple Area Radiating To The Ear?

Been having a throbbing pain on my right temple, sometimes the pain shoots to my ear or back tooth. Went to the ER last night, blood pressure was too high (203/101). Blood result, xray & ct scan came back fine. But throbbing is still there, any ideas whats wrong?

Hello,

I can understand your concern. You may seem to believe that you are having a disorder related to the temple area and the pain is referred to the ear and tooth while in reality, there is a possibility that the pain is originating in the tooth or ear and is getting referred to the temple.

As your blood pressure is too high, my first advise to you is to wait until the blood pressure reaches the normal range by medication. After that, you should visit a dentist for examination of the tooth for presence of decay or infection. Throbbing pain is usually related to decayed tooth. Treatment of the decay by root canal treatment or extraction of the tooth can solve the pain issue.

If the dentist negates presence of infection, you should visit an ENT specialist for the clinical examination of the ear regarding infection in the ear and investigations. If ear is infected, you may need to take antibiotics.

As you are in pain right now, you can take Acetaminophen 500 mg or Ibuprofen 400 mg up to thrice in a day for relief. Avoid using hot compressions in the areas.

I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic. I wish you feel better soon.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
