What Causes Throbbing Pain That Radiates To Shoulder After Pacemaker Implant?
Hi, My mother had a pacemaker put in 2 weeks ago (after an aortic valve replacement and a bypass). Today she moved in a certain way and immediately felt pain and throbbing radiating down her shoulder and left arm as well as in the area of the pacemaker. I m wondering if it s possible that she dislodged a lead? She is taking Tylenol to help with the pain and it seems to work temporarily.
Shoulder pain for some time, after pacemaker implant is a very common complaint. This may be present for a period, which may extent up to 6 months or so. There are not much studies available, for management of this pain. However, studies are available, that exercises for strengthening the muscles of shoulder girdle, give a definite relief in the pain of shoulder after the pacemaker implant.
Therefore, I will advise you to go for shoulder strengthening exercises under guidance of a physiotherapist. Still, if there is no relief in symptoms or the symptoms increase in intensity or if the new symptoms of breathlessness, palpitation etc. develop, then it is an indication for a consultation with your cardiologist and treatment done accordingly.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Satnarain Bansal, General & Family Physician
