What Causes Throbbing Sensation In Gums After Removal Of Lower Molar?
Hi - I had my lower molar extracted 48 hours ago and am experiencing a throbbing and discomfort associated with it. Is this to be expected as part of the normal healing process? Also how long should I leave it before I return to normal exercise? I usually go to the gym daily and take classes such as body pump and spin. Would it be advisable to refrain from this for a while?
Thanks for your query. The symptoms you mention in query are pointing towards the start of a condition known as dry socket .Sometimes after extraction the clot dislodge from the socket ,because of any abrupt action of oral cavity like sucking with straw ,smoking ,rinsing mouth too hardly and brushing on extraction site. This will make the entry of any food or other particle uninterrupted and cause pain or discomfort.
I would suggest you to take painkiller and anti inflammatory drug like ibuprofen or aspirin and consult your dentist .Dentist will clean the pocket with betadine solution regularly for 2-3 days.Doctor may also prescribe antibiotics if socket get infected
Avoid smoking ,alcohol and aerated beverages.Wait 2-3 more days for gym ,so that movement of body can not dislodge the newly forming clot.Because severe dry socket sometimes leads to infection of bone which is serious condition.
Hope your concern has been resolved. Get well Soon. Best Wishes, Dr. Harry Maheshwari
