What Causes Thrombocytopenia While Suffering From IBS?

I ve been on a rather consistent regiment since November of 1,000 mg 2/day of Ke flex for sinus infection. I have IBS and Graves disease I been getting red pin size dots under my skin some look like bruises. I have been taking probiotics too but was taking it aat same time as antibiotics. I had a terrible spell on Thursday of unbearable abdominal pain with constipation then finally had BM and it ended with diarrhea. I haven t had BM since until now and it had blood in it. I was told by a nurse possibly have thrombocytopenia. Is that a possibility? I m bleed easily when barely scratched or cut. Takes a few minutes to clot blood.

Hi,

For a sinus infection, it is enough to take Keflex for 7-10 days. You have been taking it since November, so it is possible that your symptoms might be due to the adverse effects of thrombocytopenia due to the above medication.

Please observe the following:
1) Keflex to be stopped.
2) it is advisable to go for complete blood counts and differential leukocyte counts.
3) also please check if you have been on any other medications that may cause low platelet count like a) heparin, b) diclofenac, phenytoin, rifampin, quinine, valproate, c) vancomycin, acetaminophen, naproxen etc.

Kindly do not neglect as it isn’t as simple as it appears. If possible please do consult a physician and report the same in order to rule out any other causes of thrombocytopenia like bone marrow diseases, few infections etc.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
