Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have spells where I feel my throat is closing up and I am choking. It is very terrifying. I gasp for air, my throat feels tight. It probably lasts around 60 seconds or so. It seems like an hour. What could be causing this?? I do have stomach acid problems. I have taken prilosec several years. I had a colonoscopy a couple years ago. I had a severe stomach infection. The dr put me on strong antibiotics for two weeks and the acid problem seemed to disappear. I did not have to take the prilosec any more. Recently, I have started having severe acid reflux again and have been taking rinitidine.
You may be suffering from gastroesophageal reflux disease with an erosion of pharynx with reflux into larynx may induce spasm to lead to tight sensation in the throat.
Until examination is done it is difficult to say what it is.
Avoid spicy food and alcohol avoid smoking and caffeine drinks. Elevate the head end of the bed. Use tablet Pantoprazole. Eat small frequent meals.
If symptoms not improved please get it done upper GI endoscopy and get treated accordingly.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Penchila Prasad Kandikattu,
