What Causes Tightness And Pain In The Chest With Shortness Of Breath?

I had a police officer preemployment physical in Thursday and they said I was fine except that my ECG had an issue. They said my heartbeats were irregularly spaced and showed me the ECG. The first two were close together and the next two were far apart. The physician assistant said he needed to show the doctor who isn t in until Wednesday. They also said the machine pointed out the irregularity so he had to have the physician look at it. I have none of the symptoms he asked about like tightness in chest, pain in chest, shortness of breath or shortness of breath with exertion. I run multiple times a week and have physical training in the academy so I don t understand how I could be having heart problems since I m fairly healthy. I ve also had echos, ecgs and holter monitors before when I was hospitalized four years ago for migraines and nothing has ever come up before. Is this going to be something that makes me unable to be an officer? I have no issues with stress or exercise so I am just so surprised they said I had this and don t want it to prevent me from being in law enforcement.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

It is suggested that you should wait for the doctor's response because he can be able to analyze it well and give an accurate response.

It is possible to see ECG changes in the absence of any signs and symptoms as you mentioned.

As well as due to technical issues in the machine or wrongly placed leads, sometimes the ECG readings come abnormal and that can be completely evaluated by a doctor only.

So, I suggest you wait and talk to the doctor in person with the ECG reports regarding any doubts on the same.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Manisha Auradkar, General & Family Physician
