What Causes Tightness In The Neck And Jaw Pain?

I have a pain between my jaw and right ear that started about 4 hours ago as a simple discomfort in the area. It has quickly spread over 4 hours to tenderness spreading down front right corner of neck and tightness in neck and jaw movement with pain. No prior history remotely related to this issue. I m 68 years old with several physical issues not related to this area.

Hello,

I can understand your concern. Though it is difficult to determine if the origin of your pain is in the jaw, neck or ear, there are some questions that can help you determine the origin.

Do you have pain while opening and closing the jaw? Or do you have any area in your mouth where food consistently gets stuck everytime you eat? If yes, you may have a Temporomandibular joint problem or a decayed tooth that might need examination by the dentist.

Do you feel pain when you move your neck from extreme side to side? Do you have pain while swallowing food? If yes, the cause may be in neck as muscle pain or sore throat/tonsilitis. If you have history of cold and associated ear pain, it could be originated in the ear. An ENT surgeon can examine you for the problem and give treatment.

Most probably, the origin lies in the jaw area as you experience pain with jaw movements. I would advise you to start with dentist. Dental pains also may cause referred pain in ear and neck area due to the same nerve supply of the areas concerned. By the time, you get an appointment with the dentist, Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen can help you in relieving pain. Please do not do hot water gargles as it will worsen pain related to abscess in oral cavity.

I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic. Let me know if you have follow up questions.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
