It started about 2 weeks ago but i started having a tightness feeling in the middle of my chest were my sternum is at and i also relized when i touched my breast bone that it felt like i had a bruise there after a week with that. I decided to go to the doctor and check to see what i was and the doctor told me that it my be chest inflamation and she also told me to get a heart echo to see if its not heart related then after that i started improving my posture and it seemed to work but now i have this feeling in my chest for whenever i get up or walk to fast my heart rate rises and then i get this shooting pain in my ribs or so i think its my ribs. Soo i dont know if its costochondritis or something else?

General & Family Physician, Dr. Sandhya's Response
Hello. Pain in the chest and ribs can very commonly result from inflammation of the cartilage that connects the breast bone and the ribs. This may result in chest pain that may worsen with change in posture. Sometimes, chest infections like cough can worsen the pain. Over the counter pain medications like acetaminophen or ibuprofen, chest physiotherapy, taking a hot shower, applying ice packs or warm compress alternately could be soothing. Drink plenty of water, avoid lifting heavy weights. A chest x ray may help diagnose costochondritis. Avoid smoking if any.
