What Causes Tingling And Swelling In The Legs And Feet When Suffering From Epilepsy?

I am a epileptic been in phenobarbital for 45 yrs. I have a bad back I have 2 ingrown toenail one each foot they are going from normal color to pink to red. I have tingling in my legs and feet as well as swelling. Yesterday I cramped so badly I could not move. Cramps were in my right leg and foot. Is this because of phenobarbital, toe nails,or back. No legs are not red but toes are. My toes hurt badly. My back hurts. Back pulled muscle, curve in spine is 10 which I was told average, and bunched up disk in back. Do I goto hospital or not?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

You seem to be a well diagnosed case of epilepsy and taking Phenobarbital for 45 years, known case of slipped discs in spine, back ache, now swelling and tingling in legs and foot with ingrown toe nails and toes are becoming red, had cramps in right leg and foot.
This looks to be a complicated case as there are so many diseases and should be thoroughly investigated to find the exact cause.
I would advise you the following in such a situation:
Go to the Hospital immediately.
Color doppler of both lower limbs for DVT that is deep vein thrombosis
Tests of blood.
MRI of spine.
Clinical evaluation by a Doctor for all the problems.
If there is DVT or infection in toenails then you need appropriate medicines as per the cause found.
Surgical approach for the ingrown toe nails, DVT and slipped discs at an appropriate time.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
