What Causes Tingling Sensation And Numbness In The Body After Taking Pravastatin?

My doctor ordered Pravastatin to lower my cholestrol several months ago. I have been experiencing pins and needles, plus numbness in my legs. I went and had an EMG, didn t confirm neropathy (spl). I then looked up the side effects of the drug to which it sites the above leg problems. I know this is the generatic for Pravachol. This condition has persisted to the point that I was wanting to believe that it was coming from a back problem that I have. I have been on several statins, each giving me leg cramps. I contacted my physician with my concerns. My cholestrol is high, like 238 my last test 3 weeks ago. She doesn t want to to change my meds, but continue on with this drug. I quit taking for 3 days today and my numbness in my legs is 25% better. I know this is from the medicine. I had asked about vytorine. What might be your suggestion.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Numbness can occur due to Vytorine (ezetimibe-simvastatin) more, even more than Pravastatin. So, just changing from Pravachol to Vytorine will not resolve your problem. If you tell me the dosage, I can decrease it to suit you.

Or you should go to other kinds of Cholesterol lowering agents. You can also take food rich in Vitamin B3. Also, if you can, I want to see your Thyroid Function Test.
T3, T4, TSH has to check once. Meanwhile you can also do this at your home:

1. No oil/ No spicy foods
2. No alcohol and never smoke
3. Green Vegetables more and fiber rich diet
4. Get More Vitamin C: citrus fruits such as oranges, grapefruit, lemons and limes, kiwi, papaya, strawberries, pineapple, cantaloupe, sweet bell peppers – green or red cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage, cauliflower,  broccoli and kale, sweet potatoes
5. Drink Some Green Tea
6. Add Some Vitamin K2 to Your Diet: hard cheeses (such as gouda), soft cheeses (such as Brie), egg yolk, butter and chicken liver.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dipan Samanta,
