Hi,
Any injury to the ankle causes a swelling around the ankle and the surrounding areas. This swelling occurs as there is an increase in the fluid in the space around the bones, nerves, and joint.
This causes the nerves to get compressed. Usually, the nerve compression is limited and the
numbness and
tingling would reduce with time. However, in some cases the swelling or numbness can last longer.
Here are a few things one can try.
- Apply ice over the area of injury and swelling for 15 mins. This will help the swelling to reduce and reduce the pressure on the nerves
- Raise the legs while sleeping or lying down to promote blood flow back to the heart to reduce the swelling. One can do this for 5 mins twice a day
- A local over the counter
analgesic cream containing
Ibuprofen can also help reduce the swelling.
In case these do not work, getting an
Ultrasound and X-ray over the ankle. This can also help to confirm the cause.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
