What Causes Tingling Sensation In The Body Upon Coughing?

Hi, my mother has COPD and recently she has been getting an electric shock feeling all over the body when coughing. My mother has had a week in hospital being unable to breathe, low oxygen levels and understandably constantly coughing. She says it feels like pins and needles in the arms, legs, buttocks etc. Goes away immediately after coughing. Can you explain why this could be? Thanks in advance.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Coughing may cause raised intrathoracic pressure lead to decreased venous return and synchop with sweating or tingling sensation. It may be a lehmitts sign seen in cervical spondylosis or multiple sclerosis in which cough induced forceful flexion of head may cause lead to shock like sensation around the body. Please check your cervical spine , check for superior sulcus tumors of the lung etc. Please consult your physician he will examine and treat you accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
