What Causes Tinnitus Post Treatment For Earache?

Good morning. My left Ear has been ringing for over a week now, lost of earring in the ear completely, just this non painful annoying ringing. This all started after I went to the doctor for pain I was having in my lung area on upper right side of my back. I went to the clinic and after doing a chest x tray, the nurse decided that I have inflammation developed between my ribs. She prescribed prednisone and cyclobenzaprine.

Hello,

Ringing in the ears is also called as tinnitus. Tinnitus is a symptom (not a disease) and therefore reflects an underlying abnormality. Causes of tinnitus are aging, age-related hearing loss, exposure to loud noises or explosions, certain medications like aspirin, NSAIDs, anti cancer drugs, diuretics, anti malarial drugs, Meniere's disease, temporomandibular joint inflammation, excessive ear wax, foreign bodies in ear, and allergies and tumors in middle ear.

Investigations recommended are audiometry, tympanometry, and MRI. If all the above causes are ruled out use hearing devices, sound generators, environmental enrichment devices, relaxation techniques or counselling and biofeedback. Your tinnitus may be related to the medication you have been using for your upper back pain. If it is so, just stopping the medication will relieve your tinnitus.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
