What Causes Twitching And Soreness In The Right Thumb?
Recently my right thumb was twitching and now it is just sore. I have had problems with this about ten years ago and was told that my cartilage was just about gone. I do a lot of work on my computer and I spend a lot of time sorting coins. This requires a lot of hand work. would it be better to use ice or heat to relieve the syptoms, along with rest. I had read about carpel tunnel and it doesn t appear to be the case. I just have used my right hand a lot and of course the thumb. I am right handed. Is heat or ice better or a combination of the two?

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi,
The symptoms could be due to overuse & would be relieved in few days with rest, fermentation &anti inflammatory pills like Ibuprofen over the counter & supplementation with calcium & vitamin E over the counter.
If no relief in a week. muscle twitching & soreness of thumb could be nerve induced pain.
It can be due to irritation of local nerve (carpal tunnel) or higher up at the neck or cervical spinal level. Consult an orthopedic surgeon for more specific advise.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Vasudha Jayant Athavale, General & Family Physician
