What Causes Twitching In Knees?

Hi, my name is Liam, I m from Australia, male and am 27, I ve had a twitch in my knees for around 7 years. The twitching feels like it s underneath the knee cap and it is very irritating and uncomfortable. It happens most at night and often keeps me awake at night. Could you please advise me what this might me and what I might be doing to cause it? Thanks!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Twitching in the knees is commonly due to dehydration, intense heat, depletion of salt (sodium and potassium), electrolyte imbalance of the body. It may also be due to muscle fatigue, lack of exercises, poor stretching, developing osteoarthritis, torn meniscus or muscle strain. You are suggested to get clinically examined by a GP, get blood tests and investigations (CT, MRI) done to detect the pathology so that the treatment can be started at the earliest.

In the meantime, get connected to a Physical therapist. Your Physiotherapist will help you do stretching exercises. Consistent, targeted, stretching exercises helps to lengthen the muscle-tendon connection and reduce muscle spasm. It may take some time. Stay adequately hydrated and avoid addictions if any.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
