What Causes Unconsciousness And Fits?

My friend's son (three years now)had spiking fever since yesterday evening. By around 7at night, he got something like fits and lost conscious for five minutes. He was taken to A&E and was given Calpol. He had spiking temperature till this morning but the fever has gone down a bit now. Why is this unconsciousness due to? She said that when he had this fits, his hands and legs have become floppy. Please help

Hi.. this is a type of febrile convulsions. In such case,at the spike of fever the child can throw convulsions and if it persists long to cause decrease in oxygen supply, the child may lose consciousness. If this is the first episode the child will need to undergo some investigation to find cause of fever and convulsions.kindly let me know about the investigation done and I will be able to tell you more about it and also about the precautions to be taken at home.
