General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi, i do care for your concern.
you have not mentioned the color of the sputum and the duration of the cough.
In most of the conditions the different odour of the sputum is caused due to pneumococcus infection.
pain produced during coughing in most of the times caused due to muscle strain of repeated coughing.
I would suggest
To take an chest x-ray and consult with your physician about and findings and treatment of the same.
even then cough recurs then sputum culture and afb staining would help a lot.
Hope I have answered your question. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.
I find this answer helpful
