What Causes Unusual Smell During Menstrual Bleeding?
I ve been experiencing saturated tampons at the end of my cycle but they are saturated with small amount of blood and the rest is what appears to be clear type discharge possibly urine based on ammonia type smell. I ve also had similar situations when no tampon used and it smelled like ammonia. What could be going on? I did not have any issues until I had an iud put in and recently also removed. Could there be a correlation

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi, I have read your question & understood your concern. Ammonia like smell to menstrual discharge indicates bacterial vaginitis an infection that causes increased vaginal discharge & ammonia like smell to menstrual blood. You need to consult a gynecologist for internal examination & vaginal swab testing ( if doctor advises).. followed by specific treatment.with antibiotic ( clindamycin) & vaginal pessaries. The complete cure & avoidance of recurrence can be assured by use of vaginal pessaries with Lacto bacilli & good genital hygiene. thanks.
