What Causes Unusual Weight Gain Around Stomach And Waist While Treating Thyroid?

I gained a good amount of weight in stomach and waistline. Like feeling bloated and miserable after eating and have an uncomfortable feeling pretty much all the time. I was diagnosed as needing thyroid medicine (0.75mcg) 6-7 months ago and have not lost any. (I thought the weight may have been from this imbalance?) I also take a testosterone compound crème daily, equivalent to my injections that were 1cc/2weeks. This is really bothering me, because I do not eat very much and I feel like mike stomach is distended or something? I am not sure what to do or try, I have spoke to my doctor but he wants to know what I eat. I tried explaining that I haven t changed my eating habits much with the exception of reducing the amount nearly 35% less. I am 45 yrs old and walk occasionally and sometimes go to the gym for light weight training. Is there any test that I should get my Dr. to perform to determine this or is there anything I could try to see if something can be done for this condition. I have always been in pretty good shape and exercised regularly in my younger years but now, feel tired, drained of energy and desire to exercise, shortness of breath with just a little activity and as mentioned above, discomfort in my stomach area.

Hi,

Hypothyroidism can cause the following symptoms of yours like:
1) Increased weight
2) Fat deposition around belly and waistline
3) Tiredness with very little activity
4) Dyspnea with exertion

I would advise my patients to undergo thyroid testing T3,T4,TSH and alter the dosage of thyroid hormone accordingly. You had mentioned about using testosterone actually it can cause blood to thicken and increase the pumping activity of heart and this can lead to breathlessness on exertion. For this, you must have your Hematocrit checked once.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
