What Causes Upper Abdominal Pain, Diarrhea And Severe Stomach Cramps?

I am getting upper abdominal pains every time I eat or drink. It started after eating a salad last night with avocado, cilantro, chicken, tomatoes and a small amount of raw onion. I had diarrhea and severe cramping last night. No one else got sick and I have had a history of having a very finicky stomach. Today, after eating 3 bites of oatmeal I had intense stomach cramps again. I have tried antacids but they do not help. Could this be an ulcer? A few years ago I had an EGD and gastric emptying study performed all which were for the most part negative. I had slightly delayed gastric emptying and a little bit of bile in my stomach.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

The two possibilities that come to my mind are gastric issues or an infection due to a stomach bug.

In my clinical practice, if a patient comes with similar symptoms, I would treat him/her with a course of probiotics like Vizylac which contains lactobacilli and a course of proton pump inhibitors like Pantoprazole.

Most symptoms are self-limiting and should get better in a day or 2. if not, further evaluation would be necessary.

Other important things to take care of are good rehydration with oral intake of tender coconut water, rice porridge with a pinch of salt, ORS etc. Buttermilk, apples, bread toast are ideal foods to consume at this time.

Avoid spicy, oily, sour foods at this time. Avoid pulses like dal, green gram, potatoes. Avoid tea, coffee, alcohol, carbonated beverages.

If symptoms don't improve, do consult your treating physician for further evaluation and treatment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
