What Causes Upper Abdominal Pain Radiating Towards Back?
i have had consistent pain on my right upper abdomen that radiates to my back. I have had grayish colored stool on and off for a month now but the pain is new. The pain is going towards my upper back now and is associated with chest pain. My right side has been a little swollen right over the ribs but will come and go.
Hello and welcome to HCM, Pain in right upper abdomen radiating to back along with history of gray colored stools is suggestive of gall bladder pathology / disorder. Associated chest pain can be due to pain associated with gall bladder pathology itself. Gray colored stools are due to blockade of bile secretion into the stools. Thus, the symptoms are suggestive of disorders of the biliary tract. I suggest you to get an ultrasound abdomen. Gall bladder pathology is most commonly due to stones in the gall bladder and the inflammation can lead to pain in right upper abdomen. If gall stones are detected on ultrasound, the gall bladder needs to be removed along with stones. You need to consult a surgeon for clinical assessment, prescription of investigations and thus management.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja Puri
