What Causes Upper Abdominal Pain With Excessive Belching?

My boyfriend is a 62 year old male who has had upper abdominal pain which he describes as under his breasts, or rib area, bilaterally for 3 days. He has had diarrhea, no vomiting. He does have a lot of excessive belching. Does this sound like a stomach bug or something I should be more concerned about?
