Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Urinary Retention After Abdominal Surgery?
My daughter had abdominal surgery today and they told her if she does not urinate within 8 hours to call a doctor. It has been almost 8 hours and she still cannot go. She has been drinking cranberry but still cannot go. Would you just wait until the 8 hours are done? Any suggestions?
Urine retention is very commonly observed in post-surgical patients. As your doctor has advised to wait for 8 hours and then inform him about the same. I would suggest you do so.
After this period, the doctor might advise hot and cold compressions likely if necessary. So do not worry and wait till the doctor comes and guides you further on this.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Manisha Auradkar, General & Family Physician
