What Causes Vaginal Bleeding After Taking Penicillin?

My 39 year old daughter has a cold and bad cough. She is now experiencing vaginal bleeding (clouting). Her period is not due for another week. The doctor has prescribed penicillin for the cold and said the hormones are often effected thus the bleeding. We are not convinced, can you give us your feedback.
