Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am 58 and have been going through menopausal symptoms for about 8 years. I have not experienced a period for about 9 months. Then, a period began and has not stopped in almost 3 weeks. I am taking a low dose birth control pill to control hot flashes. Is it typical when going through menopause to experience very long period cycles?
Yes, abnormal bleeding can occur. This can come in varying forms- infrequent periods, scant bleeding or heavy bleeding, as in your case.
Menopause is defined as a one year period with no bleeding, at this stage, you would be said to be going through perimenopause. This is the time period before menopause occurs.
I hope this helps
