What Causes Vaginal Spotting After Missing A Period?

I am 48 years old and have always had regular periods. I missed a period last month (June) then in July I started spotting and it has continued for 15 days and counting. The bleeding is very light and varies in color but is mostly pinkish. It has an odor that is different from my regular period. I m unsure what is going on or what I should have checked.
