What Causes Vaginal Spotting After Quitting Smoking?

I just recently quit smoking. I have not had a cigarette in 4 days. Now I am spotting. I should have ovulated last week according to my chart. I am celibate and usually have a very predictable and regular 28 day cycle. I was a smoker for over 20 years and am now only on the step 2 14mg patch as needed. Would recently quitting cause upset in my cycle and cause the spotting?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Smoking causes an increase in testosterone and in some cases estrogen levels also. So cessation might have caused a change in hormone levels which could have given spotting. Better to do urine pregnancy test and a transvaginal ultrasound to know the exact status of uterus.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nishad B. N., General & Family Physician
