What Causes Vaginal Spotting?

Hi doc. I m exclusively breastfeeding, but when I drink alcohol I give my baby formula. I m not usually a heavy drinker, but for the past few days I ve been taking shots with my having in the evening time. At the most 3 shots. I haven t gotten my period for 2 months, until last month when I spotted very lightly brown blood for a week. I figured it was my period kicking in. Now it came back and I ve been spotting. I m wondering if the spotting had something to do with my alcohol consumption or me not breastfeeding completely anymore so my period is all wonky. My son is 3 months old. I didn t breastfeed my first so I ve never had this problem before. My period went completely back to normal the next month. Now it s random spotting. I took a pregnancy test two days ago and it was negative. Could you help me explain this? Should I be worried? I m not in any pain and sometimes it just shows up when I wipe and doesn t get on the pad. Thank you in advance.

Hello welcome to HealthcareMagic,

I read your question carefully and I understand your concern.

Do not worry. It is completely normal up to 2 months not to have periods after delivery. It is called lactational amenorrhea. When you breastfeed suckling induces a reduction of hormones responsible for menstrual cycles. If a woman exclusively breastfeeds her baby lactational amenorrhea may continue up to six months. Because you had interrupted breastfeeding the menses have started after 2 months. It has nothing to do with alcohol. Please, try at least to avoid alcohol until your baby is 3 months.

I hope the above information will be helpful for you. Please, feel free to ask me if there is anything else you need to know.

Thank you,
Malik Amonov MD
