What Causes Variations In Result From X-ray And MRI For Fractured Tibia?

I had fractures of my right tibia and fibula in late September 2014. I was put in a boot and given a walker to use by the ER. After a week I saw an Orthopedist who made me stop weight bearing for two weeks. After 6weeks the boot came off because XRays showed the fractured healed. After continuing to have trouble, and after 5 Xrays that showed no problems, an MRI was done which showed a significant gap in the fibula. I was then told a rod would need to be placed to heal the bone. That s now been done, but I dont understand how the Xrays couldn t see this problem, or how the Dr. couldn t identify why it was still painful?

Hello,

Sometimes the X-ray doesn’t see the exact problem and it depends mainly from the position where is the problem or the size of it. In such cases we recommend further more specific examinations to find the exact problem. No worries.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Jolanda Nikolla, Pulmonologist
