What Causes Visible Vein On Calf Area In A Type 2 Diabetic Patient?

Hi My husband has type 2 diabertes and is 48 years old. His diabetes is being controlled by diet and he is on some meds. His left leg is showing some very thick curly nerve or vein very close to the surface of his skin near his calf muscle. Should this be of any concern? It was never there before

Hello,

The description given is of a vein which probably has become varicose, that is why it looks big and tortuous. This has got nothing to do with diabetes. Varicosity in the vein develops because the valves in veins become lax and blood stay instead of moving towards the heart. This can lead to some symptoms like veins appear dark purple or blue, twisted, big and bulging. There may be heavy feeling in the legs, burning or throbbing pain in the legs, itching around the veins and skin color change around the vein. It is better to consult a surgeon if the there are severe symptoms.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
