What Causes Vision Impairment While On Vimpat?

My adult disabled daughter has been on Vimpat 100mg twice daily for 8 weeks. She is now having episodes of vision impairment she does not speak but she is making it obvious by her facial gestures that she is struggling with her vision should I be concerned as I know this can be a side effect of Vimpat??

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Vimpat is not known to cause vision loss. But the drowsiness, sleeplessness, loss of balance & psychological disturbances can give an impression of vision loss or she might have accompanied refractory error.

Please get her eyes checked to exclude/confirm refractory error to get it corrected as per need or consult her treating neurologist for change in dosage or combination of Vimpat.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Vasudha Jayant Athavale, General & Family Physician
