What Causes Voice Hoarseness And Throat Pain In A Person With Thyroid Nodules?

One year ago nodules were discovered in my thyroid when I developed a anaerobic infection in my throat. I ve one large (over 1 cm) on the left side, and several smaller ones on the right. Thelarge one has been growing. Biopsies were inconclusive as the needles were unable to penetrate the nodules. I ve developed the following symptoms since in order; hoarseness with throat pain on left side only, difficulty swallowing and when drinking cold, or hot liquids I have no feeling of anything passing on the left side at the base of my neck, the feeling I m being choked if anything touches the base of my neck, recurrent gaging and aspiration of saliva, and now I have 2 large painless hard lumps my left ear. I tire and bruiser easily. Also, my sister was diagnosed with thyroid cancer the same week of my thyroid biopsy. She had 1 small lump.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello, welcome to HCM. Any swelling which cannot be felt properly from outside cannot be judged as simple tumor or cancer. It can be diagnosed by biopsy itself. voice hoarseness is caused when the nerve related to voice is compressed.Recurent laryngeal nerve is the one which is in close association with lower border of thyroid. When the size of thyroid increases due to any mass like nodule, this compreses the nerve. This causes hoarseness with pain. I hope i have cleared your doubts. Take care
