What Causes Vomiting Along With Diarrhea And High Blood Pressure?

Hello.....My grandson has had an odd assortment of symptoms during the past four months. Nothing has added up thus far--vomiting, diarrhea, high blood pressure. He has been on a gluten-free diet since Thanksgiving. He has had his thyroid evaluated and has just seen a pediatric endocronologist. All appears normal. He has a kdney scan on Friday. Am wondering if that wouild show foreign chemicals or abnormal toxicity if there is poisoning? Mark

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi Mark, your questions and symptoms indeed are varied and seem unrelated. Can you tell me a little more about your grandson, how old he is, any other pertinent medical problems? A routine blood test with chemistry panel is a good place to start, assuming these were already done. Has he had an endoscopy or colonoscopy, ultrasound of the abdomen or CT scan of the abdomen? These are all imaging modalities I would consider in addition to the kidney scan, which I am curious, what prompted that line of thinking? It is true that hypertension is commonly due to kidney issues but it wouldn't be the first place I would start. Perhaps by "kidney scan" you mean a CT scan of the abdomen. Other thoughts include celiac disease, lactose intolerance, among other intestinal malabsorption conditions. I have many questions for your grandson:

Where does he live? Any recent foreign travel? Any pertinent family history? Has he had any abnormalities on lab test performed to date, such as anemia? Was he fine prior to 4 months ago? Why did he see an endocrinologist?

Many of the answers to these questions can help elucidate the etiology of your grandsons condition, but a formal consultation with a pediatric gastroenterologist would be my next recommendation if the renal scan came out normal.

Please report back.
