What Causes Vomiting And Appetite Loss In An Infant?

My one year old daughter has been lethargic and not herself. Yesterday, she had some yogurt for breakfast and a few hours later, threw it all up. Later that day she wouldn t eat or drink anything without throwing up (except when I nursed her--she didn t throw up after that). She only threw up 2-3 times but over the whole day and hasn t since yesterday. Today, she has eaten a little bit of food, but is still disinterested. Any food that has a texture she doesn t like, she spits it out of her mouth and sometimes starts to gag (she usually eats anything). She has been nursing a lot today, drunken more water than the day before. But my question is, when should I take her in?

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

The most likely cause of this illness in an infant is due to a virus. The big concern is the state of her hydration. Does she have a fever? Or:
-dry mouth and tongue
-no tears
-doughy feeling skin
-not wetting diapers with usual frequency?

Most significantly does she have her normal state of activity and alertness?

Since this is only her second day of illness, if she has no fever, does not show signs of dehydration, and responds normally to you, then it sounds as if you can safely watch her at home for another couple of days.

Should she not have a fever (rectal is the best route) you may want to give her Tylenol anyway for presumed body aches and possible sore throat.

Assuming she has a sore throat, in addition to your milk, you may offer slightly chilled Pedialyte and small pieces of Popsicle.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
