Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
i know a man who is a severe alcoholic and hasnt had the money to buy beer for the last few days. anyway, he is having flu like symptoms including vomiting and diarrhea. he says his diarrhea looks black. is this a sign that he should be going to the hospital? are these symptoms of alcohol withdraw? or do you think he just has the flu?
Hi. Alcoholics tend to have esophageal varices - which can rupture and the resultant blood can produce black coloured stool. This should always be dealt with in the hospital. But the other symptoms can be due to withdrawl or flu. It is safer to make sure that he is not losing blood by contacting the doctor. Hope I have answered the question.
