What Causes Vomiting And Diarrhea Along With Temporary Hand Paralysis?
HI, I recently was in the Solomon Islands and had acute vomiting, severe cramping and diarrhoea . During the cramping, my hands suddenly became parralized in a hooked position and my forearms. They bent back towards my body. My husband was able to massage them back to normal. I recovered well and took 1 day to get over the virus. Both my children also sufferred vomiting, cramping and diarrhoea but did not get the paralysis. Just wondering what the paralysis might have been. I was short of breath as well due to pain management of the cramping which was almost as bad as childbirth. regards Sarah
Experiencing paralysis temporarily could be due to electrolyte and calcium deficiency. This could happen in vomiting and diarrhoea as there is fluid as well as electrolyte loss.
Kindly take oral rehydration solution regularly until the proper state of hydration is reached. Take calcium-rich foods like milk along with calcium supplementation in the form of tablets.
Gradually, you should be able to overcome the symptoms associated with muscles such as weakness, pain and cramps.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Ashakiran S, General & Family Physician
