What Causes Vomiting And Diarrhoea With Bad Odour?

My son woke up complaining of hip pain this past Wednesday morning. He vomited once around noon that same day and then developed diarrhea which is yellow in color and has a pungent foul odor. He developed a fever that reached 100.2 that same day and then broke that same night. Since then he eats very little, no longer has a fever or is vomiting but he complains of hip pain on his left hip every time he s about to have an episode of diarrhea. What could this be? Is he in the clear for it being appendicitis? When can I expect the diarrhea to stop?

Hi,

The symptoms your son is experiencing could be caused by several things, including gastrointestinal infection or inflammation, food poisoning, or appendicitis, among others.

Given that your son has had hip pain associated with his diarrhea, he may have a condition called enteric fever (also known as typhoid fever), which is caused by a bacteria called Salmonella typhi that can affect the gastrointestinal tract and other parts of the body, including the bones and joints. Hip pain is a known complication of enteric fever, particularly in children. However, other causes of hip pain such as a hip joint infection or inflammation should also be considered.

Consult with a healthcare provider if his condition does not improve or if his symptoms worsen. If he develops severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, or bloody diarrhea, seek medical attention immediately as these may be signs of a more serious condition.

In terms of the duration of diarrhea, it can vary depending on the underlying cause. Most cases of infectious diarrhea resolve within a few days to a week, but it can take longer for the gut to fully heal and for bowel movements to return to normal. It is important to ensure that your son stays well hydrated by drinking fluids such as water and electrolyte solutions to prevent dehydration.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
