What Causes Vomiting And Fever In A Child?

Hi, my son is 8 yrs old. About 13 days ago he started feeling tired or not himself . The next day he vomited and had a fever of 101.4... I assumed mild flu or stomach bug. Gave him ibuprofen. The third day, he had some residual upset tummy and threw up again, but the fever was going away. Again, I assumed flu. 10 days later, and he is experiencing stomach pain/upset tummy every day, and diarrhea that comes and goes but seems fairly persistent. I have been giving him bland foods, yogurt for probiotics, keeping him hydrated/etc. Took him to the clinic for an exam two days ago, they said most likely some kind of stomach bug. The school called again today (3rd time in two weeks) saying he was in nurses office. The nurse said maybe try some probiotic gummis, so I started him on those today. He just told me tonight that sometimes his diarrhea is black in color, which I would assume is blood... No fever or vomiting since the first couple of days nearly two weeks ago, but I m starting to get really concerned at how long this is going on, and especially the dark stool. I don t know what to do for him...

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Diarrhoea is common in children but if it persists it definitely needs attention and proper assessment and evaluation.

I Would suggest, he should get some tests including a stool test for any ova or germs, also to check for blood in stool as he may need antibiotics or antiprotozoal.

Beside some blood test are also needed. So talk to your doctor in this regards.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
