What Causes Vomiting, Numbness, Pain, Tunnel Vision, Slurred Speech In A Patient With Migraine?

My son has had migraines for 10 years. He has classic symptoms: vomiting, tunnel vision, numb right arm, & pain. Last night he had a new symptom - slurred speach & talking nonsense. We took him in to the ER & everything checked out ok, but they recommended following up with a neurologist. ( They did not do an MRI). We have a long family history of migraines, so we have just managed them w/ his family Dr up to this point. He takes 20mg Imitrex, but it didn t work last night. Thoughts? Should we see a neurologist ?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Your son is suffering from slurred speech and irrelevant talking. He has a history of migraine. he has been taking Imitrex, 20 mg prescribed by your family doctor. If he has been taking Imitrex, 20 for a long period, its side effects are sudden numbness or weakness (especially on one side of the body), sudden severe headache, slurred speech, problems with vision or balance.

Slurred speech may be indicative of stroke, neurological problems, vocal cord or throat abnormalities, circulatory problems, etc. Disorientation or nonsense / irrelevant talking commonly occurs due to sodium-potassium depletion in the body electrolyte system, dehydration, hypoglycemia, low blood pressure, stroke, TIA (mini-stroke), etc.

You are suggested to help him take rest, feed him properly with home made nutritious food to replenish the mineral depletion, hypoglycemia and BP. He should get a complete medical check up with all required tests and investigations done so that the pathology causing him symptoms may be detected and treatment started at the earliest.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
